Qwen3.7-Max Multimodal vs GPT-4o vs Claude Sonnet 4: Which Vision + Code API Should You Pick in 2026

Qwen3.7-Max just gained vision capabilities in its June 8 snapshot, putting it in direct competition with GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet 4.6 for multimodal API workloads. We compared pricing, context windows, vision features, and code-from-image use cases to help you choose — or route through all three.

· TheRouter

Three models now compete for the same multimodal API workload: send an image plus text, get back a useful answer. Qwen3.7-Max (Alibaba) just added visual modality in its June 8, 2026 snapshot, joining GPT-4o (OpenAI) and Claude Sonnet 4.6 (Anthropic) in the vision + text API space. All three accept images through an OpenAI-compatible chat completions endpoint. All three handle code generation. But they differ sharply on pricing, context window, and what "vision" actually means in practice.

We compared them across the dimensions that matter for production multimodal workloads. The short answer: Qwen3.7-Max is the cheapest by a wide margin and offers the largest context window; GPT-4o has the most mature multimodal ecosystem; Claude Sonnet 4.6 pairs vision with extended thinking for complex reasoning over images. Your choice depends on budget, context length needs, and whether reasoning depth or ecosystem breadth matters more.

What Changed: Qwen3.7-Max's June 8 Multimodal Upgrade

Qwen3.7-Max launched on May 20, 2026 as a text-only model — Alibaba's largest and most capable Max-tier model, focused on coding, agentic tasks, and long-context reasoning. On June 8, the qwen3.7-max-2026-06-08 snapshot added visual modality understanding, giving it the ability to process images alongside text.

From Alibaba's model release notes:

Qwen3.7系列中规模最大、综合能力最强的Max模型,相较于5月20日快照增加了视觉模态理解能力,能够感知真实世界场景,具备多模态交互混合智能体能力。

In English: the Max model in the Qwen3.7 series, compared to the May 20 snapshot, adds visual modality understanding — able to perceive real-world scenes, with multimodal interactive hybrid agent capabilities.

This is significant because the Max tier was previously text-only while the Plus tier (qwen3.7-plus) already had vision. Now the flagship Max model can do both, positioning it directly against GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet 4.6 for multimodal tasks that also need maximum reasoning power.

Important caveat: Qwen3.7-Max is a relatively new multimodal entrant. GPT-4o has been processing images since its launch, and Claude models have had vision capabilities since the Claude 3 generation. The depth and reliability of Qwen3.7-Max's vision capabilities across edge cases is less battle-tested. We recommend evaluating on your specific image types before committing production traffic.

Vision Capabilities Compared

All three models accept images via the OpenAI-compatible messages format using image_url content blocks. But the scope of what each model handles differs.

Document Understanding and OCR

All three models can extract text from screenshots, scanned documents, and photos of text. In our testing, Claude Sonnet 4.6 tends to be more precise with complex document layouts (multi-column PDFs, tables with merged cells). GPT-4o handles standard document OCR reliably. Qwen3.7-Max's document understanding benefits from strong Chinese-language OCR — if your documents include CJK text, this may be a deciding factor.

Scene Analysis and Real-World Images

GPT-4o has the most mature real-world scene understanding, having been trained with vision from the start. Claude Sonnet 4.6 performs well on analytical tasks over images — "what's wrong with this circuit diagram" or "what design patterns does this UI violate." Qwen3.7-Max's release notes emphasize "perceiving real-world scenes" and "multimodal interactive hybrid agent capabilities," suggesting strength in GUI understanding and agentic visual workflows, though independent benchmarks are still limited.

Code from Screenshots

All three models can generate code from UI screenshots — a high-value use case for frontend development. The workflow: screenshot a design mockup or existing UI, ask the model to produce HTML/CSS/React code.

In our testing:

  • Claude Sonnet 4.6 with extended thinking produces the most structurally accurate code from complex UI screenshots, but at the highest cost per call.
  • GPT-4o handles standard screenshot-to-code tasks reliably and has the widest ecosystem of tools built around this workflow.
  • Qwen3.7-Max is competitive on simpler UI-to-code tasks, with the advantage of thinking mode for complex layouts, at a fraction of the cost.

API Surface Comparison

All three models use the OpenAI Chat Completions API format for vision requests. Here's how each looks in practice:

Qwen3.7-Max via DashScope:

from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    api_key="YOUR_DASHSCOPE_KEY",
    base_url="https://dashscope-intl.aliyuncs.com/compatible-mode/v1",
)

response = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="qwen3.7-max-2026-06-08",
    messages=[{
        "role": "user",
        "content": [
            {"type": "image_url", "image_url": {"url": "https://example.com/screenshot.png"}},
            {"type": "text", "text": "Generate React code that recreates this UI."}
        ]
    }],
)

GPT-4o via OpenAI:

from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(api_key="YOUR_OPENAI_KEY")

response = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="gpt-4o",
    messages=[{
        "role": "user",
        "content": [
            {"type": "image_url", "image_url": {"url": "https://example.com/screenshot.png"}},
            {"type": "text", "text": "Generate React code that recreates this UI."}
        ]
    }],
)

Claude Sonnet 4.6 via Anthropic (OpenAI-compatible):

from openai import OpenAI

client = OpenAI(
    api_key="YOUR_ANTHROPIC_KEY",
    base_url="https://api.anthropic.com/v1/",
)

response = client.chat.completions.create(
    model="claude-sonnet-4-6",
    messages=[{
        "role": "user",
        "content": [
            {"type": "image_url", "image_url": {"url": "https://example.com/screenshot.png"}},
            {"type": "text", "text": "Generate React code that recreates this UI."}
        ]
    }],
)

The code is nearly identical across all three — swap base_url, api_key, and model. This is what makes routing between them straightforward: the same request payload works against all three endpoints.

OpenAI-compatible means a provider exposes a chat-completions endpoint whose request and response shape matches the OpenAI API contract closely enough that an unmodified OpenAI SDK call works against it after swapping three values: API key, base URL, and model name.

Pricing Comparison

Cost is where these three models diverge the most. All prices are per million tokens unless noted.

What This Means in Practice

For a typical multimodal workload (1K tokens input text + 1 image, 500 tokens output), the per-request cost is roughly:

  • Qwen3.7-Max: ~$0.004
  • GPT-4o: ~$0.008
  • Claude Sonnet 4.6: ~$0.011

At 100K requests/month, that's approximately $400 vs $800 vs $1,100. The gap widens with longer outputs — Claude's $15/MTok output rate is 3x Qwen3.7-Max's ~$4.95.

Regional pricing caveat: Qwen3.7-Max pricing varies by DashScope deployment region. Singapore pricing is roughly 50% higher than China mainland (¥18.7/MTok input, ¥56.2/MTok output). Factor in your deployment region when comparing.

Context Window and Long-Document Use Cases

FeatureQwen3.7-MaxGPT-4oClaude Sonnet 4.6
Context window1M tokens128K tokens1M tokens
Max outputNot publicly specifiedNot publicly specified64K tokens

Qwen3.7-Max and Claude Sonnet 4.6 both offer 1M-token context windows — roughly 8x GPT-4o's 128K. This matters for multimodal workloads that combine images with large code repositories, long documents, or multi-turn conversations with image history.

If your use case involves analyzing a 200-page PDF with screenshots (which can easily exceed 128K tokens), GPT-4o is not an option without chunking. Qwen3.7-Max and Claude Sonnet 4.6 can handle it in a single request.

Rate Limits and Regional Considerations

Latency from US/EUModerate (Virginia/Frankfurt endpoints available)LowestLow

For teams in China: Qwen3.7-Max on DashScope has the best latency and no access restrictions. GPT-4o and Claude require network workarounds from mainland China.

For global teams: GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet 4.6 have more predictable latency and documented rate limits. DashScope's international endpoints (Singapore, Virginia, Frankfurt) are available but pricing is higher.

Decision Matrix

Pick Qwen3.7-Max if:

  • Budget is a primary constraint — it's roughly half the cost of GPT-4o and a third of Claude Sonnet 4.6
  • Your workload includes Chinese-language documents or CJK OCR
  • You need 1M context for long multimodal conversations
  • You're already using DashScope for other Qwen models
  • Your team is based in China and needs low-latency, unrestricted access

Pick GPT-4o if:

  • You need the most battle-tested multimodal model with the widest ecosystem
  • Third-party tool compatibility matters (most vision-AI tools target OpenAI first)
  • 128K context is sufficient for your workloads
  • You prioritize ecosystem maturity over cost

Pick Claude Sonnet 4.6 if:

  • Your multimodal tasks require deep reasoning (extended thinking over images)
  • You need 1M context with the strongest analytical capabilities
  • Coding from complex screenshots is a primary use case
  • You're building agentic workflows that combine vision with multi-step reasoning

Routing Between All Three with TheRouter

Because all three models expose OpenAI-compatible endpoints, you can route between them using TheRouter. A single API call format works across all three — TheRouter handles endpoint resolution, authentication, and model fallback if one provider is unavailable or rate-limited.

A practical routing strategy for multimodal workloads:

  1. Primary: Qwen3.7-Max for cost efficiency on standard vision tasks
  2. Fallback: GPT-4o for ecosystem compatibility or when DashScope is unavailable
  3. Upgrade path: Claude Sonnet 4.6 for tasks flagged as needing extended reasoning

Note: As of this writing, Qwen3.7-Max (qwen3.7-max-2026-06-08) is not yet in TheRouter's model catalog. GPT-4o and Claude Sonnet 4.6 are available now. When Qwen3.7-Max is added, the same routing configuration will apply. In the meantime, you can configure it as a custom model endpoint pointing to your DashScope API key.
