Doubao Seed 2.1 API Guide: Pro vs Turbo Routing on Volcengine Ark via TheRouter
A complete guide to ByteDance's Doubao Seed 2.1 on Volcengine Ark — model IDs, Pro vs Turbo routing decision matrix, pricing, rate limits, common errors, and TheRouter integration.
ByteDance released Doubao Seed 2.1 on June 23, 2026 at the Volcengine FORCE conference. It ships in two tiers — Pro for deep-thinking agent workloads and Turbo for high-throughput production at lower cost. Both are available through the same OpenAI-compatible endpoint on Volcengine Ark, which means you can route them through TheRouter by changing one model ID string.
This guide covers everything from account setup to a Pro-vs-Turbo routing decision matrix, so you can pick the right tier for each workload without guessing from the names alone.
Caveat: Doubao Seed 2.1 model IDs are not yet listed in TheRouter's models-data catalog. The routing paths described below are based on Volcengine Ark's OpenAI-compatible API, which TheRouter supports for ByteDance models. Check the live model list for current availability.
OpenAI-compatible means a provider exposes a chat-completions endpoint whose request and response shape matches the OpenAI API contract closely enough that an unmodified OpenAI SDK call works against it after swapping three values: API key, base URL, and model name. The minimum surface in practice is POST /v1/chat/completions with messages, model, and an OpenAI-shaped streaming response.
Getting Started with Doubao Seed 2.1 in 3 Minutes
If you already have a Volcengine Ark account and API key, skip to Step 3. If not, see our Volcengine Ark complete guide for detailed registration instructions.
Step 1: Create a Volcengine account. Sign up at console.volcengine.com and complete real-name verification (实名认证). This is mandatory before calling any model.
Step 2: Get your API key. In the Ark console, go to API Key Management → Create API Key. Copy and save the key immediately.
Step 3: Enable Seed 2.1 models. Navigate to Provisioning Management (开通管理) → Language Models (语言模型) and activate Doubao-Seed-2.1-Pro and/or Doubao-Seed-2.1-Turbo. Each model must be individually enabled.
Step 4: Make your first call.
from openai import OpenAI
import os
client = OpenAI(
api_key=os.getenv("ARK_API_KEY"),
base_url="https://ark.cn-beijing.volces.com/api/v3",
)
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="doubao-seed-2-1-pro-260628",
messages=[
{"role": "system", "content": "You are a senior software engineer."},
{"role": "user", "content": "Review this Python function for edge cases and suggest improvements."},
],
)
print(response.choices[0].message.content)
Swap doubao-seed-2-1-pro-260628 for doubao-seed-2-1-turbo-260628 to use the Turbo tier. The API surface is identical — same endpoint, same SDK, same request format.
Coding Plan endpoint: If you are using Volcengine's Coding Plan (designed for coding tools like Cursor or Claude Code), use
https://ark.cn-beijing.volces.com/api/codingas the base URL instead.
Pro vs Turbo: Which Tier for Which Workload
The naming invites a simple mental model — "Pro for hard stuff, Turbo for easy stuff" — but ByteDance's own framing is more nuanced. Here is what we know from the official release and independent reports:
| Dimension | Seed 2.1 Pro | Seed 2.1 Turbo |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | Flagship deep-thinking model | High-throughput production tier |
| Model ID | doubao-seed-2-1-pro-260628 | doubao-seed-2-1-turbo-260628 |
| Input pricing | ¥6 / 1M tokens (~$0.83) | Lower (exact rate not yet published by Volcengine; third-party reports ~$0.45/1M) |
| Output pricing | ¥30 / 1M tokens (~$4.15) | Lower (proportionally reduced) |
| Cache-hit pricing | ¥1.5 / 1M input tokens | Not yet published by Volcengine |
| Latency | Higher (deep reasoning) | Lower (optimized for speed) |
| Multimodal | Text + images | Text + images |
| Coding benchmarks | Top-tier on ProgramBench, Code Arena Frontend | Approaching Pro per vendor |
| Agent benchmarks | SOTA on GDPVal, ALE, SeedClawBench | Competitive per vendor |
| Best for | Complex multi-file refactors, long-horizon agent tasks, architecture reviews | High-volume chat, lightweight code generation, latency-sensitive pipelines |
Pricing sourced from Volcengine FORCE conference announcement (June 23, 2026) and third-party aggregators. Verify against official Ark pricing before production deployment.
Decision Matrix
Pick Pro when:
- The task requires multi-step planning across files or repositories
- You need tool-use orchestration with error recovery
- The workload involves complex document/image understanding before code generation
- Cost per request is secondary to output quality
Pick Turbo when:
- You are running high-volume inference (chatbots, autocomplete, inline suggestions)
- Latency matters more than marginal quality differences
- The task is well-scoped (single-file edits, formatting, simple Q&A)
- You want to keep token costs as low as possible
A Note on Benchmarks
All benchmark numbers cited above are vendor-reported by ByteDance (June 2026). We have not independently verified them. The Agents' Last Exam (ALE) result is notable because the benchmark was released shortly before Seed 2.1, reducing the likelihood of task-specific optimization. ProgramBench and GDPVal results should be treated as directional signals, not guarantees of performance on your specific codebase.
All Doubao Seed 2.1 Model IDs and Capabilities
As of June 2026, the Seed 2.1 family on Volcengine Ark includes:
| Model ID | Type | Context | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
doubao-seed-2-1-pro-260628 | Text + Vision | Not yet published by Volcengine | Flagship. Deep thinking, agent, coding. |
doubao-seed-2-1-turbo-260628 | Text + Vision | Not yet published by Volcengine | Production tier. Faster, cheaper. |
ByteDance also previewed a Seed 2.1 Preview variant for early testing. Check the Ark console model list for the latest available IDs — Volcengine updates model availability without always updating public documentation simultaneously.
Relationship to Seed 2.0 Models
Seed 2.1 is the successor to the Seed 2.0 family (Pro, Lite, Mini, Code). If you are currently using doubao-seed-2-0-pro-260215, Seed 2.1 Pro is the upgrade path. Key differences:
- Coding: Seed 2.1 Pro delivers end-to-end coding delivery (requirement analysis → implementation → testing → validation), whereas Seed 2.0 Code was a specialist variant
- Agent: Seed 2.1 introduces general-purpose agent capabilities (tool use, cross-environment task execution) that Seed 2.0 did not emphasize
- Multimodal: Enhanced visual understanding (charts, documents, video) with spatial reasoning
- Pricing: Seed 2.1 Pro at ¥6/30 per M tokens is positioned similarly to Seed 2.0 Pro
Pricing Comparison: Seed 2.1 vs DashScope vs DeepSeek
How does Seed 2.1 pricing compare to other Chinese AI API providers?
| Model | Input ($/1M tokens) | Output ($/1M tokens) | Context | Provider |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Doubao Seed 2.1 Pro | ~$0.83 | ~$4.15 | Not yet published | Volcengine Ark |
| Doubao Seed 2.1 Turbo | ~$0.45 | ~$2.00 (est.) | Not yet published | Volcengine Ark |
| Qwen3.7-Max | ~$1.40 | ~$5.60 | 1M | DashScope |
| DeepSeek V4 | $0.14 (cache: $0.014) | $0.28 | 128K | DeepSeek |
| DeepSeek V4 Pro | $1.11 | $4.44 | 128K | DeepSeek |
USD prices calculated at approximate ¥7.2/$1 exchange rate. All prices subject to change — verify with each provider.
Seed 2.1 Pro sits in the premium tier alongside Qwen3.7-Max and DeepSeek V4 Pro. Seed 2.1 Turbo undercuts all three on input pricing while claiming competitive quality — if your workload is cost-sensitive, Turbo is worth testing against DeepSeek V4 (which remains the cheapest option overall).
Rate Limits and Quota Management on Volcengine Ark
Volcengine Ark uses a tiered rate-limit system:
- Free tier: New accounts receive complimentary tokens upon first model activation. Sufficient for testing but not production.
- Pay-as-you-go: Rate limits scale with account spending history and verification level. Enterprise verification unlocks higher quotas.
- Provisioned throughput: For guaranteed capacity, Volcengine offers reserved throughput plans. Contact your Ark account representative for pricing.
Specific RPM (requests per minute) and TPM (tokens per minute) limits per model tier are not publicly documented in a unified table. Check your Ark console Overview page for your current quota allocation, or contact Volcengine support for enterprise limits.
Tip: If you hit rate limits during testing, enable multiple Seed 2.1 model variants and load-balance across them. TheRouter's fallback routing can automatically retry on a different model when one returns 429.
Common Errors and Fixes
| Error | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
Invalid API Key | Key copied incorrectly or expired | Re-copy from Ark console. Keys start with sk-. |
Model not activated | Model not enabled in Provisioning Management | Go to Ark console → Provisioning Management → activate the model |
Connection timeout | Network issue or wrong base_url | Verify https://ark.cn-beijing.volces.com/api/v3. If calling from outside China, latency is expected — consider a proxy or VPN. |
Insufficient balance | Account credits depleted | Top up in Billing Center (费用中心). Check for free-tier expiration. |
Model ID not found | Using wrong model ID format | Use exact IDs like doubao-seed-2-1-pro-260628. The format is doubao-seed-{major}-{minor}-{tier}-{date}. |
Context length exceeded | Input exceeds model's context window | Reduce input length or chunk the request. Context window sizes for Seed 2.1 are not yet publicly confirmed. |
TheRouter Integration: Routing Doubao Seed 2.1
We route Volcengine Ark models through TheRouter's OpenAI-compatible gateway. The setup:
from openai import OpenAI
client = OpenAI(
api_key="your-therouter-api-key",
base_url="https://therouter.ai/api/v1",
)
# Route to Seed 2.1 Pro via TheRouter
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="bytedance/doubao-seed-2.1-pro",
messages=[
{"role": "user", "content": "Refactor this module to use dependency injection."},
],
)
TheRouter handles authentication, rate-limit retries, and provider failover. If Volcengine Ark returns a 429 or 5xx, TheRouter can automatically fall back to a configured alternative (e.g., DeepSeek V4 or Qwen3.7-Max).
Note: Doubao Seed 2.1 is not yet in TheRouter's curated model catalog. The model IDs shown above may differ from the final TheRouter-normalized IDs once they are added. Check /providers/bytedance/ and /models/ for the latest available routing paths.
Fallback Configuration Example
For a coding-agent workload where quality matters but you want cost resilience:
{
"models": [
"bytedance/doubao-seed-2.1-pro",
"bytedance/doubao-seed-2.1-turbo",
"deepseek/deepseek-v4-flash"
],
"fallback": true
}
This tries Seed 2.1 Pro first (best quality), falls back to Turbo (same family, lower cost), then to DeepSeek V4 (different provider, cheapest). See our fallback routing guide for the full configuration reference.
Production Checklist
Before deploying Doubao Seed 2.1 in production:
- Verify model IDs against the Ark console — snapshot-dated IDs (e.g.,
260628) may be superseded - Test both Pro and Turbo on your actual workloads before committing to a tier
- Set up billing alerts in Volcengine Billing Center to avoid surprise charges
- Configure fallback routing via TheRouter to handle Volcengine outages or rate limits
- Confirm regional latency — Ark's primary endpoint is in Beijing (
cn-beijing); Shanghai (cn-shanghai) is also available - Monitor context window limits — Seed 2.1 window sizes are not yet publicly confirmed; test with your expected input sizes
- Check TheRouter model catalog for official Seed 2.1 routing support before relying on direct model IDs
- Review Volcengine's terms of service for data residency and compliance requirements
